Despite the restrictions on their work and actions, the economists
of the Soviet period produced a great deal of bold and important
work. With the erosion of the old Stalinist controls, economists in
the Soviet Union themselves became very interested in the history
of their profession, not least in order to find authentic voices
that might offer reinforcement or counterpoint to the policy
analyses and recommendations with which policy makers in the
transition countries are today being bombarded. This major new
reference work pulls together many years of research in order to
present a bio-bibliographic dictionary of Russian and Soviet
economists, many of whom have previously had no coherent record
compiled of their careers, achievements and wider significance.
Through exploring this rich tradition of economic thought, we can
go some way in understanding the role of economists in the
functioning of the Soviet system, as well as bringing previously
forgotten work to light, raising new questions, and providing a
memorial to those who suffered as a result of the system. This
hugely detailed and important new volume takes into account all the
nuances of the story of Russian and Soviet economic thought, such
as regional issues, the reform and transition to a market economy,
and the economic output of non-economists. Featuring nearly 500
entries, and including a detailed contextual introduction, this
landmark volume will be a vitally important reference work for all
those with an interest in the history of economic thought, the
history of economics and Russian and Soviet history more generally.

The latest edition in the successful Builders Series, Civic Builders contains international coverage of government buildings and city halls. Commencing with an introduction on the history of civic buildings, this volume goes on to showcase 30 contemporary case studies by world renown architects, including Foster and Partners, Richard Meir and Helmut Jahn. Each project is fully illustrated by the incorporation of texts, plans and photos of civic buildings. Civic life is not only about the authority of government and the duties of citizens, but should also encompass passion and imagination. Civic Builders presents recent municipal buildings around the world that subscribe to this attitude: they all demonstrate a quality of playfulness and liveliness, whilst maintaining their dignity and power. The book focuses on the city hall, where people have the most direct experience of government, both on the purely symbolic level and in the nitty-gritty of governmental functions. Organised chronologically, it begins with Säynätsalo Town Hall in Finland and three North American city halls: Toronto, Boston and Dallas. The Post-Modernist Portland Building, the James R. Thompson Center and Mississauga City Hall take us into the 1980s, followed by a profusion of intriguing civic buildings that began to emerge in Europe, North America and Asia in the 1990s - including Ottawa City Hall, the Vidhan Bhavan, La Flèche Town Hall, Murcia Town Hall and the Clark County Government Center, which is shown on the cover. It concludes with several projects in the United States that are still on the drawing board. Beyond city halls, the book includes legislative buildings such as the Reichstag (1999) and the European Parliament Building (1999); some buildings that are only symbolically public, such as the Berlin Chancellery (2001) and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia (1999); and designs that show civic imagination can flourish even in the service of administration. It is possible to see in these buildings a warmth and welcome, and a sense of connection to community. They bring to mind the base meaning of 'metropolis', whose roots are literally 'mother-city'. In short, they show the human touch. In Darkest Alaska Travel and Empire Along the Inside Passage Robert
Campbell "Scholars of U.S. history will not want to miss this
well-written and compelling book. . . . "In Darkest Alaska"
illuminates a realm of potent anxieties about natives, nature, and
national expansion which have shaped American culture and politics
right down to the present day."--Louis S. Warren, author of
"Buffalo Bill's America: William Cody and the Wild West Show" "A
work of sweeping erudition and insight. If, as he so convincingly
shows, Alaska was a Rorschach test for the American imagination,
then Campbell is the peerless interpreter of its imperial and
racial foundations. This is a serious trip in the best sense
imaginable."--James C. Scott, Yale University "One of the most
sophisticated and important studies of western American travel and
tourism and one of the most significant histories of Alaska. . . .
A brilliant study on many levels and a superb inaugural volume in
the new Nature and Culture in America Series. It is theoretically
rich, structurally innovative, very well written, deeply
researched, and beautifully illustrated."--"American Historical
Review" "The environmental particulars of Alaska (and the Northwest
Coast in general) present a wonderful backdrop for his human
history. . . . Written with style and grace, this carefully crafted
work rests on a firm documentary foundation."--"Journal of American
History" Before Alaska became a mining bonanza, it was a scenic
bonanza, a place larger in the American imagination than in its
actual borders. Prior to the great Klondike Gold Rush of 1897,
thousands of scenic adventurers journeyed along the Inside Passage,
the nearly thousand-mile sea-lane that snakes up the Pacific coast
from Puget Sound to Icy Strait. Both the famous--including
wilderness advocate John Muir, landscape painter Albert Bierstadt,
and photographers Eadweard Muybridge and Edward Curtis--and the
long forgotten--a gay ex-sailor, a former society reporter, an
African explorer, and a neurasthenic Methodist minister--returned
with fascinating accounts of their Alaskan journeys, becoming
advance men and women for an expanding United States. "In Darkest
Alaska" explores the popular images conjured by these travelers'
tales, as well as their influence on the broader society. Drawing
on lively firsthand accounts, archival photographs, maps, and other
ephemera of the day, historian Robert Campbell chronicles how
Gilded Age sightseers were inspired by Alaska's bounty of
evolutionary treasures, tribal artifacts, geological riches, and
novel thrills to produce a wealth of highly imaginative reportage
about the territory. By portraying the territory as a "Last West"
ripe for American conquest, tourists helped pave the way for
settlement and exploitation. Robert Campbell teaches history at
Montana State University, Bozeman. His work has appeared in
"American Quarterly" and "Pacific Historical Review." Nature and

the great Klondike Gold Rush of 1897, travelers returned from
